NOAA Weather and Climate Dynamics Group
Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory
Princeton, NJ

UCAR’s Cooperative Programs for the Advancement of Earth System Science (CPAESS) is seeking to fill a Visiting Scientist position at the NOAA Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory in Princeton, New Jersey.

This is an initial two-year position with possibility of a one-year extension.  Initial consideration will be given to applications received prior to 17 November 2017.  Thereafter, applications will be reviewed until this position is filled.  A foreign visa will be supported for the positions.  Partial relocation costs will be provided.

What You Will Do

This position(s) will focus on the continued development of the GFDL AM4 and fvGFS models at convection-resolving (< 4km) scales for nowcast to S2S scales and beyond. The qualified candidate(s) will have a strong background in the simulation of mesoscale and convective-scale features: examples include but are not limited to tropical convection, tropical cyclones, severe local storms, orographic and coastal phenomena, boundary-layer motions, or intense rain, wind, ice, or snow events. The qualified candidate(s) should have substantial experience configuring, running, and evaluating numerical models (idealized or comprehensive) for simulating these phenomena.

Job Responsibilities Include:

  • The responsibilities of the position will include supporting the PI's and other group members' efforts to:
  • Design model configurations for simulation and prediction on convection-resolving scales, including of the FV3 dynamical core and the GFS and AM4 physics suites.
  • Prepare weather and climate simulations.
  • Analyze model output and compare to observations, including the development of diagnostics for prediction and verification with standard datasets and new observational products.
  • Document and present changes to the model and model results.
  • Design of graphical presentation of results, including figures for our real-time prediction website.

What You Need

  • A PhD in Atmospheric Sciences or related field is desirable but not required.
