Where You Will Work

The Cooperative Programs for the Advancement of Earth System Science (CPAESS) develops customizable solutions to complex scientific challenges by fostering scientific leadership and workforce, building community collaborations, and facilitating the advancement of research for the benefit of society.  CPAESS facilitates and manages scientific research and research-to-operations appointments for early career and expert scientists at US institutions, federal laboratories and program offices. CPAESS collaborates with the community to provide an array of scientific opportunities that promote lifelong professional and workforce development and that fosters a new generation of leaders within the scientific community.

What You Will Do

The position functions as a mid-level Linux system and network administrator for the Office of Water Prediction (OWP). The position is located at the OWP office in Chanhassen, Minnesota. The OWP's Information System (IS) consists of a network of mobile devices, office systems, server compute/processing resources, and public web services. The IS resources are distributed among multiple geographically separate OWP data centers.

Responsibilities include:

  • Software and hardware administration of Linux servers, workstations, and virtual machines.
  • Advanced software and hardware administration and design and planning of networking components: switches, routers, firewalls, etc.
  • Information system data storage management: SAN and NAS planning and configuration, data backup, cloud storage.
  • Provides information system security management: research, planning, implementation, documentation, and auditing.
  • Software and hardware administration of Mac OSX and Windows workstations and virtual machines.
  • Provides in-depth user support and high-level helpdesk functions.

What You Need

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology or Information Systems, or a closely-related major, and a minimum of four years relevant professional experience; OR Master's degree in a closely-related field and a minimum of three years relevant professional experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Minimum professional experience of three years as a full-time Linux system administrator.
  • Advanced knowledge and ability in Linux system administration practices.
  • Advanced knowledge and ability in maintaining x86-based server and workstation hardware.
  • Advanced knowledge and ability in network administration practices.
  • Working knowledge and ability in Windows system administration practices.
  • Working knowledge and ability in OSX system administration practices.
  • Working knowledge of disk storage systems: SAN and NAS technologies, high-bandwidth fabrics, RAID and LVM configuration.
  • Working knowledge and ability in UNIX shell scripting/programming.
  • Working knowledge and ability in providing remote system and network administration over the Internet.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent problem solving skills.
  • Ability to multi-task, effective management of assigned priorities and deadlines.
  • Ability to utilize and adhere to a project plan.

Desired Skills

  • Recent or current professional certifications in any of the following: Linux system administration (preferred), Microsoft Windows Server system administration, Cisco network associate or professional, information security roles or practices, incident handling.
  • Design and management of centralized authentication in heterogeneous system environment.
  • Smart Card authentication systems.
  • Management of Cisco routers, Cisco ASA firewalls, and Cisco NEXUS switches.
  • Cisco VPN support.
  • Windows Active Directory management.
  • Assessment and implementation of FISMA requirements.
  • Effective management of security incident response.
  • 1x service and device administration.
  • Wireless network administration.
  • Virtual server and workstation configuration and management.  Ex. VMware.
  • WAN support.
  • Information system vulnerability detection and mitigation.
  • Tape and disk-based data backup system management.
  • Trouble-ticket system management.
  • HTTP/HTTPS service administration. FTP service administration.
  • Management of automated system monitoring systems.
  • SQL database administration.
  • Basic knowledge of at least one high-level programming language: C, C++, Java, Perl, Python, FORTRAN, etc.
