Carbon Cycle Science Program

The Carbon Cycle Science Program (CCSP) is housed in the Carbon Cycle Science Project Office within CPAESS at University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR). CCSP is a community-focused program that represents and consults the breadth of the carbon cycle science community to identify thematic priorities and opportunities. Logistical support for the Program Office and the activities it leads is provided by the UCAR/CPAESS in Boulder, Colorado. Fifteen federal agencies and departments have coordinated and supported our program activities.

Originally, the Carbon Cycle Science Program was first executed in consultation with the Carbon Cycle Interagency Working Group (CCIWG), which coordinates and facilitates activities relevant to carbon cycle science, climate and global change issues under the auspices of the U.S. Global Change Research Program (USGCRP).

Mission Statement

The Carbon Cycle Science Program serves as an authoritative information source for United States-produced carbon cycle science research, modeling, and observing. CCSP prioritizes direct engagement with scientists, federal agency partners, local governments, state governments, the private sector, and stakeholder communities, and provides important information necessary to advance decision-making at local, state, and federal levels. This includes the production of a decadal plan with community-identified priorities.

Current Major Activities

The Carbon Cycle Science Program is currently working with members of the carbon cycle science community to identify community priorities and focus. These themes are being incorporated to the Third Decadal Carbon Cycle Science Plan: third in a series of plans, first published in 1999 (A U.S. Carbon Cycle Science Plan, Wofsy & Sarmiento, 1999), then 2011 (2nd U.S. Carbon Cycle Science Plan, Michalak et al., 2011).
