What is GeoDES

A project funded by the NSF to provide professional development (PD) for a cohort of 30 geoscientists to

  1. increase their knowledge of bias and social justice issues relevant to the geosciences;
  2. engage in bystander intervention techniques using interactive virtual reality simulations to learn how to counteract prejudicial structures;
  3. develop faculty members’ leadership skills to target critical gatekeeping decisions as a strategy to transform their own home institutions; and
  4. support faculty members’ continued development into champions for diversity, equity, and inclusion.

When is the meeting, and what will it involve for me?

First, faculty will participate in a 3-day workshop from November 13 to 15, 2017, 8:00am to 5:00pm, each day, where we will teach and challenge participants to think critically about race, gender, sexual and gender identity, and ability, as well as develop leadership techniques and skills. The workshop will culminate in bystander intervention training using innovative, virtual reality, role-play, scenarios developed in collaboration with Mursion, Inc.  Next, participants will continue to meet for a monthly journal club over video conferencing, where participants will discuss readings that address equity, inclusion, and leadership.  We will discuss in more depth how we can support each faculty member in applying what was learned to that faculty’s specific institution.

Were will the activities take place?

The 3-day workshop will take place at UCAR’s CG1 — 3080 Center Green Drive, Boulder, Colorado, in the North Auditorium.

The monthly journal club meetings will take place virtually--all you need is an internet connection!

How much will this cost me?

This is absolutely FREE TO YOU!  We cover all the costs associated with travel, lodging, and meals.  We will arrange all travel and accommodations for you.  All you have to do is show up from November 13 – 15, 2017, and then sign in once a month for a virtual journal club where project team members can continue supporting you in becoming a champion for diversity.
