The NOAA Aerosols and Ocean Science Expeditions (AEROSE) have partnered with the PIRATA Northeast Extension project to collect an unprecedented set of atmospheric data from the tropical Atlantic Ocean, sampling a broad range of important regional meteorological phenomena. This presentation will focus on a key objective of the AEROSE campaigns, namely to acquire correlative "truth" datasets in support of NOAA satellite calibration/validation (Cal/Val). Data collected over open-ocean are particularly valuable for passive satellite remote sensing. These data include atmospheric profile data obtained via dedicated rawinsondes and ozonesondes, along with sunphotometer and IR spectrometer data. These provide independent correlative datasets necessary for validation of environmental data records (EDRs) derived from the NOAA Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) NOAA-20 and Suomi NPP satellites.
