Meeting Overview & Objective

Changes in how water is stored in the land surface and across the Earth has broad implications for society, especially in the domains of water availability, flood and drought occurrence, and sea level rise.  Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment Follow-On (GRACE-FO) mission, launched in 2018, continuously extends the global 23+ year record of Earth’s monthly gravity and water mass changes from the first GRACE mission (2002 to 2017).  The observations of Earth’s water movement and month-to-month surface mass changes enable important applications for everyday life in the evolving Earth system.  These measurements provide essential and unique information on changing groundwater availability in the US and across the globe, as well as early warning for emergent drought and flood conditions.

Monitoring changes in ice sheets and glaciers, near-surface and underground water storage, the amount of water in large lakes and rivers, as well as changes in sea level and ocean currents with the GRACE-series provides an integrated view of Earth’s global water cycle and energy balance. Additionally, GRACE-FO also provides unique observations of solid Earth processes, such as glacial isostatic adjustment and large earthquakes. GRACE-FO data play a key role in up-to-date terrestrial reference frames that provide an enduring foundation for monitoring changes in the geoid and sea levels, as well as allowing for precision orbit determination for satellites.

The objective of the 2025 GFO-STM is to provide the community of data producers, users and practitioners with mission status updates, as well as near-term plans towards the launch of the planned GRACE-C mission in 2028. Furthermore, the meeting is a forum to present & engage in discussion about algorithm improvements, and novel science and applications results.
