Dr. Chen's presentation will investigate the tropical cyclone (TC) forecasts in the models which are participating in the DIMOSIC (DIfferent MOdels - Same Initial Conditions) project. Seven models from different institutes have joined in the project, including the System for High-resolution prediction on Earth-to-Local Domains (SHiELD) from GFDL. All models run 10-day forecasts initialized at 00Z every 3 days with the same initial conditions provided by the ECMWF during June 2018- June 2019. Dr. Chen will compare the TC forecast skills based on the common TC forecast evaluation metrics, e. g. errors/biases of track and intensity, as well as on the TC related precipitation, and TC genesis evaluation. This presentation will provide an overview of the goals of the Unified Forecast System (UFS) from both a hardware and software perspective, as well as a research and educational tool. As high-performance computing becomes more readily accessible, and open source model code becomes more user friendly, community engagement and innovations will rapidly evolve. A vision of how this changing paradigm can be managed in a way that is mutually beneficial to the public, private, and academic sectors will be discussed. Discover more here
