CPAESS Staff Shine at AGU 2024
Each year, the American Geophysical Union (AGU) holds an annual meeting for Earth system scientists across the globe. At least 100 countries are represented and this year near 30,000 minds gathered to share research and connect with friends and colleagues. From December 9-13, 2024, this year’s AGU took place in Washington, D.C. with the theme “What’s Next for Science.”
CPAESS scientists and staff gave 33 oral presentations and posters. With topics as diverse as NOAA Climate & Global Change Postdoctoral Fellow Makato Kelp’s “Efficacy of Recent Prescribed Burning and Land Management on Wildfire Burned Severity and Smoke Emissions in the Western United States,” CPAESS Program Specialist with the US Carbon Cycle Science Program’s Rebekah Stein’s “Water and heat stress impacts on photorespiration recorded in tree isotope biogeochemistry,” and NASA Jack Eddy Postdoctoral Fellow, Mei-Yun Lin’s “From Ionosphere or Moon? A Study of Metallic Ions in the Magnetosphere.” We had a little bit of everything from our staff. We even had a poster representing our NASA Heliophysics Summer School program.
SPS | CPAESS Leadership, Director Hanne Mauriello, and Deputy Director Cindy Bruyère spent a great deal of time meeting with our sponsors and connecting with staff. We had a wonderful time visiting as many of you as we could and learning about your research.
At AGU, CPAESS hosted two luncheons for both our NOAA Climate & Global Change postdoctoral fellows and alumni, as well as our NASA Jack Eddy postdoctoral fellows and alumni. These luncheons serve to connect past fellows with current ones continue our efforts building these critical communities.
Our NOAA Climate & Global Change luncheon was hosted by our Deputy Director Cindy Bruyère with a talk from Steve Thur, Assistant Administrator for NOAA’s Oceanic and Atmospheric Research. We had a full house with our new fellows gleefully meeting our alumni and sharing their expertise, career paths, and generally having a great time getting to know each other.
CPAESS also hosted a wonderful luncheon for the NASA Jack Eddy Postdoctoral Fellows and alumni with the largest gathering to date. Our own Cindy Bruyere opened up the festivities with NASA Program Manger Kelly Korreck and NASA’s Senior Advisor in Heliophysics Lika Guhathakurta sharing NASA’s upcoming work with the fellows and alumni. The heliophysics community is becoming more and more important and recognized in astrophysics, and this fellowship is one of the only programs that focuses specifically on growing new scientists for this important field.
A special thank you to Maggie Payeur, CPAESS Events Lead for her excellent management of these two important annual luncheon events.
CPAESS also helped with the UCAR | NCAR booth, which was easy to find in the exhibit hall. Both Kate Rodd, CPAESS Program Specialist and Dawn Mullally, CPAESS Communications Manager were on hand to share the many educational and job opportunities that we have for students and early career professionals. We also had a marvelous heliophysics demonstration with Dr. Nick Gross to promote our NASA Heliophysics Summer School. Nick uses silly putty to demonstrate magnetic reconnection in space physics to visitors. He is a critical leader in our Heliophysics Summer School program. Last year’s students even created an impromptu lunch with each other to take advantage of connecting while so many were at AGU.
It is always a genuine highlight of the year to meet with and learn from our many wonderful co-workers across both a multitude of sciences and locations throughout the country. We are so proud of your work advancing Earth system science and appreciate your efforts to communicate your science to others.
