CPAESS was thrilled that two people connected to our program received awards at this year’s AMS! Our co-worker Neil Jacobs became an AMS fellow; and Chidong Zhang, a NOAA Climate & Global Change Postdoctoral Fellowship Alum from it's first class won the Warren Washington medal.

A sincere congratulations to Neil Jacobs, CPAESS Chief Science Advisor who became an AMS Fellow. Jacobs is credited with spearheading the creation of the NOAA Earth Prediction Innovation Center (EPIC) to support community development of the Unified Forecast System (UFS). The UFS is intended to “support the Nation’s Weather Enterprise and to be the source system for NOAA’s operational numerical weather prediction (NWP) applications (Source).”

According to the AMS, the AMS Fellow distinction is reserved for those who have made “outstanding contributions to the atmospheric or related oceanic or hydrologic sciences or their applications during a substantial period of years.” Learn more about Neil here.

We would also like to extend our congratulations to one of our alumni from the NOAA Climate & Global Change Postdoctoral Fellowship from the 1st class, Chidong Zhang who won the Warren Washington Research & Leadership medal! “The Warren Washington Research and Leadership Medal is presented to individuals who are recognized for the combination of highly significant research and distinguished scientific leadership in the atmospheric and related sciences (AMS).” Warren Washington was a groundbreaker in the atmospheric sciences and a beloved and Distinguished Scholar at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR).

Chidong Zhang was part of the first class of the NOAA Climate & Global Change Postdoctoral Fellowship that CPAESS has had the pleasure of partnering with NOAA on for 35 years. As part of this inaugural class of fellows in 1991, Dr. Zhang researched at the University of Washington. It is truly an incredible full circle to see Chidong receive this prestigious award.

Congratulations to both Neil Jacobs and Chidong Zhang who are both truly vanguards in Earth system science.
