Abstract This study uses the UFS coupled model to examine Monsoon Onset Vortex (MOV) formation and early-season monsoon behavior over the Arabian Sea. MOVs, recurring in about 60% of years, influence monsoon onset and often intensify into tropical cyclones. Simulations from UFS prototypes (P5, P6, P8) were compared with ERA5, JTWC, and GPM data for 2011, 2014, and 2015 cases. The model captures the Somali Jet–rainfall relationship but underestimates rainfall strength. P8 performs best in reproducing the 2015 MOV’s structure, track, and rainfall. Results show that accurate wind initialization and mesoscale convection representation are key to improving early-season monsoon forecasts.
