Description of scientific projects
Currently studying IODP Expedition 306 sites drilled at selected locations, directly south of the central Atlantic “ice-rafted debris belt” (Sites U1312 and U1313) and in the southern Gardar Drift (Site U1314), to monitor glacial–interglacial changes in NADW formation and circulation. Sites U1312 constitutes a reoccupation of DSDP Site 608 located northeast of the Azores Islands (Portugal) on the southern flank of the King’s Trough tectonic complex at a water depth of 3554 m. Site U1313 constitutes a reoccupation of DSDP Site 607 located at the base of the upper western flank of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge in a water depth of 3426 m, ~240 miles northwest of the Azores Islands. The rationale for reoccupying this site was that it constitutes a benchmark site for studying long-term (millions of years) surface and deep ocean climate records from the subpolar North Atlantic and its location presently provides excellent monitoring of NADW. Site U1!
