Global precipitation, lightning and soil moisture monitoring by electromagnetic techniques
Description of scientific projects
Rainfall and soil moisture are highly variable. These quantities can best be measured globally from space by means of microwave sensors. Unfortunately those require low orbiting platforms that only provide intermittent observations. We are using the internet to coordinate data from widely dispersed ground based radio receivers to infer continuos measurements needed to fill data gaps. Those data are then assimilated into mesoscale weather prediction models.
