Description of scientific projects
My research interests deal with a wide range of radiative transfer and satellite remote sensing problems, but revolves around gaining a better understanding of cloud-radiation interactions and their role in climate. Current focus is on (1) cloud detection and classification using the Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) on board the EOS-Terra platform; (2) developing new methods in constructing cloud climatologies, which are critically needed for climate modeling research, such that they contain more information about cloudiness compared to current climatologies; (3) sampling issues found when comparing point measurements to area averaged measurements; (4) how to properly account for the three-dimensional radiative transfer effects in real clouds in the remote sensing of cloud properties.
