Description of scientific projects
Improved prediction of partitioning of anthropogenic carbon between the ocean, atmosphere and terrestrial biosphere is needed to assess future greenhouse gas forcing. Determination of the oceanic uptake is a critical component of this study. Methods commonly used are to quantify the CO2 flux across the air-water interface and/or measurements of changes in CO2 inventories or proxies thereof in the ocean. Specific areas of study are improving instrumentation, methods and algorithms to constrain surface fluxes including interpolation methods using remotely sensed products. For inventory estimates incorporating carbon system observations into new generation prognostics models, inverse modeling of carbon transport in the ocean, and assessment of sampling strategies for future observational campaigns are areas of high interest.
