Description of scientific projects
CIESIN, the Center for International Earth Science Information Network, is a center within the Earth Institute of Columbia University, based at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory outside of Manhattan. CIESIN has a broad range of activities related to research, data management, and education on human interactions in the environment. Specific areas of interest include: development and application of georeferenced population data products and services; application of remote sensing to human dimensions problems; multidisciplinary assessment of hazard vulnerability; measurement of trends in environmental sustainability; and assessment of subnational distributions of poverty, hunger, and other socioeconomic and environmental parameters related to sustainable development. CIESIN staff include scientists from a wide range of natural and social science disciplines as well as information technology and data management specialists. Current as of 1/8/2003
