Description of scientific projects
My area of expertise is Paleoclimatology based on the sediments recovered from large lakes, especially in tropical Africa. During the past decade I have been studying sediment cores recovered from the large lakes of the East African Rift Valley, analyzing for geochemical signals of past climate change. These signals include biogenic silica, isotopic composition of ostracodes and endogenic carbonates, and trace element analyses of ostracodes. I am a co_PI on a major new deep drilling project that will recover cores of about 500 m length in Lake Malawi in January - March 2004.
