Description of scientific projects
I am interested in understanding and modeling the large scale response of the atmospheric circulation to external forcing, both natural, e.g., volcanic eruptions and low frequency oceanic modes, and anthropogenic, e.g., greenhouse gases or ozone destroying substances. I use and develop a hierarchy of models of the atmospheric circulation. I'm also interested in the role of the stratosphere in troposphere weather and climate, with a particular interest in coupling by waves (both large scale Rossby waves, and small scale gravity waves), and in how the stratosphere extends predictability of surface weather on sub-seasonal to seasonal time scales.
