Description of scientific projects
I am currently reconstructing the fire and vegetation history of the Willamette Valley, OR and WA, through the use of fossil pollen and charcoal preserved in lake sediments. This project looks at the impact of both natural climate variability and human influence on fire activity and changes in vegetation communities. I am also part of a project that is working to reconstruct the fire and vegetation history of southern Belize. This is an interdisciplinary project that is working to better understand the rise and fall of the Maya civilization in the context of climate variability and landscape change.
