TITLE: In the Eye of the Storm: From Storm-Force Errors to Gold Standard Science
SUMMARY: Every hurricane flight depends on trust: trust in the aircraft, the crew, and the measurements that guide life-or-death decisions. But what happens when a “gold standard” data record for extreme winds quietly drifts off course, and no one notices for years? Drawing on two decades inside the hurricane mission environment, this seminar uses a real failure in our most trusted ocean surface wind measurements in tropical cyclones, as a case study in how hidden biases can ripple through forecasts, satellite calibration, and AI training.
This brings us to a central question for the Earth system science community: In an era of exploding data volume and complexity, how do we restore and sustain true gold standard science? Data quality is not just a technical input; it is a strategic asset.
